What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical procedure using medical-grade pigments to create the look of stubble on the scalp, giving the appearance of a shaved head instead of complete baldness.

SMP is NOT a Tattoo. Unlike tattoos, SMP places pigment at a shallower depth.

So what is the big deal in a hair restoration like this?

The success of scalp micropigmentation depends on placing pigments at the right depth. Too deep (mid-dermis or hypodermis) causes a blurred "blow-out," while too shallow (epidermis) leads to fading. When done correctly, the procedure remains undetectable and retains color long-term. At Evolved Clinics in Gurgaon, Delhi, and Lucknow, only SMP specialists perform Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), often combining it with hair transplants for patients needing density but lacking enough donor hair.

When should Scalp Micropigmentation be done?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is ideal for:

• Covering scalp scars

• Early thinning in women not needing a transplant

• Enhancing density after a hair transplant

• Severe balding with insufficient donor hair

• Those preferring a non-surgical solution

SMP (Scalp Micro Pigmentation)
How is the SMP procedure performed at Evolved Clinics in Gurgaon, Delhi and Lucknow?

Your SMP journey is expected as follows:

Consultation: To start with, our hair treatment doctor will assess your hair loss through a consult and recommend you a customized treatment plan. Your hairline will be simulated to match your desired look. Irrespective of your skin tone, we are able to match the shade of our pigment to perfectly fit your scalp.

Preparation: As you may expect, it's best to shave your hair as close to your scalp as possible so that your SMP specialist is better able to fill in the problem areas.

First Session: The 1st session will lay the foundation of replicated hair follicles. Post session, you will notice a discernible difference and a full look emerge. SMP typically takes 2-4 hours per session depending on your degree of hair loss.

Subsequent Sessions: Most patients can expect 2-3 sessions to complete their SMP treatment depending on the extent of hair loss/ scarring. These hair restoration treatments are usually spaced 14-21 days apart. For these sessions, we add additional layers of density to create the appearance of full, short hair with a natural look.

After care: After your final hair implant, we will provide you with aftercare instructions, which are fairly simple to follow. This includes no direct sun exposure for approximately 3-4 weeks and avoiding chlorinated water (hot tubs/ pools) for around 10 days.

Back to work: Being a non-invasive hair transplant procedure, SMP requires no down time with the benefit of immediate hair restoration results. In most cases, you will not need to take any extended time away from work.

Touch-up Session: We expect the strength of the color to last 2-3 years. The pigment contains no additives and therefore will only lighten, not discolor over an extended time. When this occurs, you can undergo a small “touch up” session to secure many more years of your style.

Does this hair transplant procedure hurt? Any side-effects?

For most patients, the pain is minimal and it's consistently less painful than traditional tattoos. After your session, you won't experience any further discomfort.

The scalp may be a bit reddish for 2-3 days post session, so we recommend wearing a hat after treatment if you wish to conceal the redness.

Can I still use Finasteride and/or Minoxidil after my treatment?

You can continue using Finasteride during and after your SMP. However, topical Minoxidil should be temporarily suspended during the course of treatment and for 30 days post session. This is to ensure the proper healing and settling of pigment without interference of the chemicals found in Minoxidil foam.

How much will the SMP hair transplant cost?

It really depends on the size of your scalp tattoo, the complexity of your procedure, and the number of follow-up appointments required. To give you an indication:

• A small MPG session can cost around INR 35,000
• A large MPG session can cost around INR 100,000.

How long do the results last?

After completion of your hair restoration treatment (2-3 sessions), you should expect the strength of the colour to last for many years. Over a longer term, you will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolour) of the treatment. When this occurs, you can undergo a brief “touch up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of your style.

Can I still get a hair transplant surgery done?

Hair transplant surgery can be performed prior to this technique but also after the technique if further hairs are required or desired. Because we are trained hair transplant surgeons, SMP can be offered as part of a range of therapies to manage any future hair loss.
